There was one more, but sadly this brilliant idea has left me. Maybe one day it shall return.

Yay for Friday

overheard at advogato.org:
The whole strategy of object orientation is based on the notion that you have a clear idea as to how the problem breaks down. But when you are working in an unfamiliar space, that's not always possible - you need to get some practical experience in working with the space before you have an intuitive sense of what the conceptual partitions between objects are.

Many times I have gotten frustrated doing something the 'right' way, figured 'fuck it', and done something simpler and more expedient. Sometimes it turns out to be a hack, but often it turns out to actually be a more flexible solution, for the very reasons I got frustrated by.
  • I have tried very hard to become the arrogant asshole that I am today. Many years of practice, sacrifice and self discipline.
quote of the day : And don't forget the first rule of writing internet applications - 'Don't re-implement TCP/IP'.

I've been meaning to get around to setting up some digital recording stuff at home. I'm still a few aeons away from it becoming a reality, but this guy has given me some inspiration.

Tuesday 12-JUN-2001

Yay to the 3 day week-end. I've decided 3 days is really the minimum amount of time needed for a restful break. It affords the opportunity of going completely beserk for 2 days/nights and still have time for all those minor things life-type things (like washing and stuff).

I entered a competition to win an ibook, if you're listening Jobsie - send one over buddy - on a related note: Mac OS X versus Windows 2000 in the heavyweight round

So you want to put on those desert boots, fire up your Red Hat box and punch out some PHP/mySQL gear? But, apart from a social life - is something _else_ missing ?

Other links you might find useful in developing with mySQL.
There's more to life than mySQL, how about Sybase 11 on Linux?

Quote of the day : "Dance, dance, everybody look at your pants"

Last night we were likening our self worth to that of a CD. It was decided that if I were a CD, I would be one of the sad, sorry and competely insignificant items left behind on the floor after an Opportunity Shop moved out.[1]

Sure - they'll pick up the second-hand underwear that they sell (with bonus stretch marks) if they fall out of the removalist boxes, but the consensus was that it would be unlikely that they'd waste their time picking up a CD of me if I happened to fall out of the box too.

My opening price was $19.95 - a price I was none too happy with ( I was sure I'd be worth at least some kind of swanky cool-ass collectors item, like a rare limited edition box set - $140 eeeezy !).

I was dreaming - bigtime. If I only knew what heartbreaking events were ahead of me.

Not even the price of a new release CD I tell you ! The Ba-Ha Men are ahead of me, and that kind of caper does nobody no good.

To make matters worse (boy - was I going down or what ?) it was anticipated that I would immediately drop into the $14.95 bin.

All of a sudden - I was unworthy of even being in a record shop ! Nup - not even a second hander! I was destined for what can only be described as a fate worse that a fate worse than death. I would be so lacking in any percievable value that not even the dirtiest, tightest Op Shopper would consider handing over currency for me.

It start to really hurt be around the guts - I could hardly breathe - and it had nothing to do with the fact the the room was in hysterics. This was serious stuff - it came to me in a vision which turned my whole world on it's head : I was the trash, not the treasure.

The final valuation put me well under 20c - well less actually - because the Op Shop clearly didn't see _any_ value in myself. So there I was - destined to spend the rest of my days in a deserted shop floor - dusty, worthless and forgotten.

Aren't friends just the bestest ?!

[1] Similarly to when you move out of a house - you take everything that you own apart from that which is truly worthless and burdensome. It's an opportunity of off-load stuff that doesn't command the effort to be jacked into a dumpster.

Overheard:
(about SQL Server Vs mySQL/postgresSQL as a solution)
But why have a cost effective DB solution when your Web scripting solution is so damn expensive

I really have to get this XML/XSL/JSP/Servlet weblogger off the ground. Haven't thought up a name yet - but rest assured folks - it shall be good.

Nutrition
Fresh vegetables, fruit, easy on the red meat, don't smoke or drink too much alcohol etc..

Frankly, I don't buy it.

Over the last 5 weeks, I don't think I've cooked one meal. I generally miss breakfast, I _do_ have lunch, and many a time don't really have dinner. Weekends have consisted of lunch on Friday, something in the afternoon on Saturday and something Sunday night.

And you know what - I feel great ! Three hours of sleep - no worries !

I did have glandular fever last year - and a couple of times recently I've felt my glands come back up again - but as soon as I get some decent sleep (7+ hours) its all good again.

I do drink alot of water, and I don't eat 'traditional' take-away food but I haven't shopped for about 5 weeks - apart from bread and toilet paper ;).

Both my housemates are sick at the moment - and I was running circles around their party stories. Maybe the secret lies in the Echinecia pills that I have. They're strawberry flavoured (yum) so they go down a treat (not like the putrid liquid you can get) and I think they've been responsible for keeping me in line.

The Queen's birthday is this week-end - and it's gonna be another massive one. There's allsorts of goodies in store over those three days.

Of course - as soon as I write this - I'm going to get struck down with some debilitating disease and be left terminally useless. Come and get me !

What a day, what a week, what a month ! I'm back - it's been bad - but, my - has it been good !
A recent highlight would have to be seeing the Dandy Warhols at the Forum. It's always great to take a non fan (especially a good looking one ;) and get them right into it.
We have found a new party location. The roof of my warehouse apartment. City views, 360 view of Fitzroy and the surrounding suburbs. Champagne, water pistols, cowboy hats, doobies, beanbags and Elvis sunnglasses - it doesn't much better than that.
Even album out now, Something For Kate out later in the month - A tidy month of Melbourne Rock (yes - it rocks !).
OK - I'm going to state it here so I do it. I'm building a Bean/Servlet/JSP publishing system that will create the HTML pages which will then be sent via FTP to this site. The FTP component will hopefully be a servlet.
I heard somebody was doing a JSP/Fusebox implementation - I'm going to try to track it down. If anyone knows - mail me
I'm using mycgiserver for free jsp/servlet hosting. Be warned though - you have to answer a tooootly hard question ! Lucky I memorised the J2EE API ; ).
. Here's a link to some tutorial stuff too.
Aaaarrrrrcha ! - Here's some stuff that I've been getting into:

Monday 26/3/2001

I'm sick - very pissed off about it too...

Update - purchased some Codral Day/Night pills. They're not as good as the ones I had on Friday night ;^) - but they definately have some kick. I always used to go el-natural when it came to being sick or when I hurt myself - that was back in the bad-old-days.
I now believe that modern medicine can solve most of my problems, if not just momentarily...

Friday 23/3/2001

Haven't been here for a while - must check it out again sometime...

Thusday 22/3/2001

Played bingo last night at the Terminus in Richmond. Hey - this ain't your average bingo. There's a cross dressing bingo girl (Noleen - who has a mad crush on Harold from Neighbours) , crappy op-shop prizes, plenty of gutter talk and beer, of course. It costs nothing and it's good harmless fun, and you never know - you could just be a winner.

Web Monkey has reported a very interesting tool called "Code Lifter" that allows you to grab hidden JS, PL and CSS files from a web page. Very useful for bug fixing. Code Lifter

quote of the day : Welcome to the human race Trent. Conversations do tend to wander off on tangents. I first noticed that when I was a child. I guess in your case it took longer - Michael Kear .

Big week-end. The Melbourne Comedy Festival has started. After smoozing with some of the MCF organisers and comedians the go is:

  • The Three Canadians (doing a very progressive show - a real leap from their earlier stuff)
  • Fiona McClauglin (Alice Spring's only female comedian)
  • Dave Hughes (of course - Hughsey !)

King Kapesi kicked ass last night at the rooftop cafe above RRR. It was a good scene - fitzroy + RRR is such a good mix. Although he did get in the bad books when he mistakenly said JJJ (instead of RRR) but he made up for it - very funny ! My housemate detests hip hip/rap so I stuck the King Kapesi sticker on his fridge. I look forward to a beating when I see him next.

Looking through some of my mp3's - came across GG Allin. What a truly broken freak. Read all about him here.

A month since Valentines day - my my - how things have changed ;-) !

Man - I'm totally addicted to Josh Homme's voice. Kyuss were awesome - but I actually enjoy Queens of the StoneAge alot more. There's so much doof going around my apartment block that I just love slapping on some stoner rock and letting it rip ;)

Melbourne rock has never been better - checked out Magic Dirt backed by Legends of Motorsport (and the Bangs) on Sunday night. MD were absolutely awesome. They have progressed from a loose, slightly hectic live show to a tight punchy act. Hey - they still cut sick so it's all good !
I remember back in 1993 I was shocked the first time I saw them live - they were raggedy and dishevelled(!) - gobs of feedback, occasional sloppy guitar and drawn out (read : kinda boring) feedback solos.
On Sunday - they played the way I think I always wanted them to play. It's a front runner for gig of the year - hey - yo gotta start the list sometime ! The rythmn guitarist from The Legends of Motorsport is also in the running for the most tragic 70's porn sunglasses of the year. He was also wearing a 'wifebeater' - so he obviously did well with the bonus points. What a good little retro-devo.

I'm seeing King Kapesi tonight for free - islander Hip Hop on a Samoan tip.

The User Group Open Day is this weekend - it's at VTR Consulting, Roseneath Place, South Melbourne. They have multi-colored office walls and a pretty cool work space. Anyway - good for networking, checking the word on the street, yadda yadda.

Currently listening to some old skool Beastie boys, Public Enemy, NWA and De La Soul while cutting some super kung foo code. Fridays are great ; )

Did I mention it was fun friday ? It's 33 degrees, its nearly the week-end, I had a great lunch with a fantastic chick, I've got it all sorted, ah, not so fast, before you go :

Quote of the day 1: So there are some of us who investigate the dustbunnies under the bed - Richard Kern.

Quote of the day 2 : For a long while, I thought the layoffs were kind of funny, but now not so much. In the beginning, the Internet was like this hot new bar, right? Everyone wanted in, and the 80-proof dot-com juice was flowing, and if you put a lampshade on your head and danced around, you got $40 million in funding. But then it was last call, the taps ran dry, the lights came up, and the people wearing lampshades were just, you know, people wearing lampshades - Andrew Marlatt.

Quote of the day 3 : that's a job for the cheque book, boys.

Borland Interbase is getting talked about more and more. I haven't used it - but it is being pushed as an alternative to SQL Server. Finding ODBC drivers can be a little tricky at the moment though.
Why do you need an alternative to SQL Server - here's one reason.
Other products to keep in mind are PostreSQL (open source)- or if it's only a medium size dB - go go with a commercial product like Sybase Adaptive Server.

Even microsoft are using coldfusion. check it out. Which reminds me - I must check out what MSDE is all about.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry, or to go buy some. Super 70's mackn' interior style.

A nice site integrating ColdFusion & Flash. Even though alot of flash sites get bagged (form over function, flashturbation etc) it is still such a coooool technology.

Ate plenty of dirt at Sunday's downhill race out at Narbethong. So that's it - I'm getting fitter, stronger and faster starting from today. Well - make that tomorrow - because I'm still waaay too sore from yesterday to do much more than walk. It was basically the fatigue that got me - gotta stop having big nights before races. It's time to get serious - get back to riding 'full angry'.

Quote of the day : Neither way is wrong and either way can be right. Just remember, you can keep calling it an apple as long as no one sees its an orange. Was that a really crappy made up addage? - Mike Craig

I'm going to start looking at mind-mapping tools soon too. Visual Mind Mapper, The Brain, VisiMap and the others out there. Stay tuned. On a related note Project Kick Start.

Cross-browser DHTML API Reading Room - I really should read this !

That trouble maker Neale Talbot has stopped blogging and is no longer viewable in Nutsrape Complicator 1,2,3,4.x - which isn't a bad thing, really. I haven't tried the Mozilla browser yet - I probably should check it out.

PJ Harvey - Live at the Wireless tonight on JJJ. What a chick ;). Saw her at the BDO and it was great. Not quite as good as QOTSA (Queens of the Stone Age) or At The Drive In - but still a good show and worth tuning into - if you're into that sort of thing.

phrase of the day : And when did you become the Social Arbitor of Cool, Hip and Happening?

I've had my coffee - I've done the drinking. Now it's time to get linking...
